Academic Dishonesty FAQs

Please reach us at info@schwartzarmlaw.com or call us at (301) 474-2300 if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. Even when the allegation is not criminal, an academic misconduct finding can potentially affect grades, academic standing, scholarships, enrollment, disciplinary records, and future educational or professional opportunities.

Before responding in detail, review the allegation and the school's academic integrity procedures. Preserve relevant materials such as drafts, notes, emails, document histories, assignment instructions, and other evidence that may help establish how you completed the work.

Not necessarily. Similarity-detection software identifies matching or similar text, but the meaning of those results depends on the sources, citations, assignment, and circumstances. The underlying evidence should be evaluated rather than relying solely on a percentage or score.

An AI-detection result may be considered by a school, but it should be evaluated in context with the other available evidence. Drafts, version histories, research materials, prior writing, and other information may be important when a student disputes an AI cheating allegation.

It depends on the institution's policies and applicable law. Some schools permit an attorney to serve as an advisor but restrict the attorney's participation, while others have different rules. We review the applicable procedures to determine how we can assist.

Many colleges and universities provide an appeal process, although the grounds and deadlines vary. Students should review the decision and applicable appeal procedures promptly.

Potentially. The effect depends on the nature of the finding, the student's record, the institution, and the requirements of the particular graduate program or licensing authority.
